The Need - Helping People and Local Businesses
Our local groups are rising to meet the challenge -- helping people, keeping people fed, and supporting our local economy and businesses.

Parkdale, with its low-income and other vulnerable populations, is facing the greatest challenge to provide essential support services and food to people in need. This is where we need to focus efforts to help local groups that are keeping people safe and healthy.

Both Parkdale and Roncesvalles businesses have been hard hit by the shutdown. Restaurants are offering take-out and delivery, and other stores have set up delivery services. Our Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) are updating lists of what stores are open for business.

See how you can help fight COVID-19 by supporting local groups...

Helping People

Here's a list of key groups and projects in our community that need your support! The main focus is on Parkdale, where the need is greatest. In particular, these amazing groups need our support:

  • PARC - providing much needed help to those in need

  • Parkdale Food Bank and Greenest City - providing food to those in need

  • Parkdale People's Economy - setting up neighbourhood pods to help people who are housebound.

PARC - Parkdale Activity Recreation Centre

PARC has always been a community leader in helping people in the Parkdale community.  Now more than ever, their services are needed to help keep the vulnerable people in our community safe during the pandemic. This is their request:

If you would like to support our work, monetary donations are the most efficient way. This allows us to purchase the exact supplies we urgently need on short notice. We also have purchasing relationships with suppliers, so we can buy items at a lower price than retail customers.

You can support PARC with a monetary gift to ensure that our incredible frontline workers are able to keep the kitchen stocked, the drop-in is diligently cleaned and sanitized, and supportive services are provided to our members and tenants.

Parkdale Food Bank

The Parkdale Food Bank's mission is to provide food for those in need, the hungry and the impoverished. This is how they are responding to the COVID-19 crisis:

In addition to regular cleaning and disinfection practices we are implementing social distancing measures at our Queen West location. We are also creating programs to reach our most vulnerable clients in time of social isolation.

Greenest City

Greenest City has long been working on food security in Parkdale. They have responded to the current crises by starting a foodbox program:

Greenest City is partnering with Foodshare to provide Good Food Boxes to community members who are in need of assistance securing nutritious groceries in these difficult and confusing times. Our efforts to distribute food to members of the community will be carried out with strict adherence to public health guidelines. Programs such as this one have been designated essential services and Greenest City has received confirmation to continue with this program.

Helping Local Business

Our local restaurants, cafes, bars, and stores are part of what makes our community a great place to live. Even in times of social isolation, we can support our local stores as they do their best to stay open and provide us with the food and services we need.

Check the Business Improvement Area in your neighbourhood to see what stores are open or online, or check the status of your favourite stores online.
